The ABF VAT Accountant roles is based in the UK but is part of ABF Finance in NL. The role has a dotted line into the UK Tax Team and supports UK VAT compliance activity.

The ABF VAT Accountant’s primary responsibility is for preparation of the UK Quarterly VAT Return for ABF, UK branch which includes Leasing and Commercial Finance business lines


Place in the organisation

The ABF VAT Accountant role sits within ABF Finance, NL, with a dotted line into UK Tax (part of the UK Finance function and reporting into the UK, CFO).

The job holder will work closely with other accounting team members in ABF Finance NL and colleagues in the UK Tax function as well as colleagues in other functions as dictated by the requirements of the role.


Overview of the department (dotted line reporting into UK Tax)


The main objective of the ABF Finance, NL team is accurate reporting and data provision to all relevant stakeholders (AAB Group Finance, Finance NL, Group and Local Tax).

The responsibilities of the UK Tax function are broad due to the varied business lines and ABN AMRO UK being part of a wider international group.


The principal activities of the UK Tax function are as follows:

  • The UK tax function has responsibility for accurate and timely filings and payments for compliance and reporting responsibilites in relation to Corporation Tax, VAT, WHT, PSA, stamp duty, transfer pricing, ad hoc employment tax advice, AEOI and BBSI reporting requirements
  • The UK tax function proactively advises and assists all UK business lines in relation to tax matters, as required
  • The UK tax function ensures that the UK operates within the Group’s tax risk appetite and that a transparent, open relationship is maintained with HMRC
  • The UK tax function builds and maintains strong relationships with Group Tax and UK business lines

Your job

Perform the ABF VAT Accountant role in an efficient and controlled manner by:


• Preparing the ABF, UK branch VAT return by extracting data from various IT applications, verifying the data, analysing transactions by applying UK VAT rules
• Conducting product, fees/charges, transactional reviews by following internal SOPs and HMRC VAT compliance guidance
• Ensuring adequate record retention and compliance with HMRC documentation and process requirements to include reviewing/addressing any changes in the data supplied for VAT Return purposes both driven by changes in IT applications and in the business
• Active participation in ongoing MTD process and systems refinements as required
• Maintaining up to date documentation of VAT processes, as required, via SOPs, process notes, checklists etc
• Ensuring compliance with all relevant Internal Control requirements and identifying improvements, where required
• Initiating and implement improvements in relation to the VAT return preparation process
• Supporting the UK Tax team with ad hoc VAT advisory requests
• Providing VAT training to other ABF teams including Accounts Payable, Sales Support, FR&R etc
• Building and maintaining strong relationships with ABF Finance and the UK Tax function
• Providing support on non-UK VAT related compliance tasks e.g. PAYE Settlement Agreement analysis

Your profile

• ACA (or equivalent) or CTA (part or fully) qualified tax professional
• Experience in preparation/oversight of UK VAT returns and providing ad hoc VAT advice on a range of topics.
• Strong quantitative and qualitative analytical skills.
• Proficiency in SAP and Microsoft Office applications and, in particular, Excel.
• Quick learner and ability to work in agile manner
• Strong organisational skills.
• Experience of managing a wide range of stakeholders.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Working knowledge of Partial Exemption Special Methods as relates to Financial Services (ideally banking) is desirable
• Financial Services (ideally banking and in particular asset leasing and commercial finance) exposure is desirable
